Better Models, Better Medicine, Kinder Science

Exploring how human-relevant science is transforming research, saving lives, and protecting animals.

Quick Check-In! 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️

Have you taken any medicine in the past year? (Antibiotics, allergy pills, inhalers, vaccines, etc.)

Who We Are

Kindness Ranch provides sanctuary, rehabilitation, and adoption opportunities for animals released from research facilities. But our mission goes beyond sanctuary—we support the evolution of better science.

"The animals you meet here are not symbols of bad people doing bad things. Most researchers are trying to protect human health. We work cooperatively with facilities because science is supposed to improve. When we develop tools that are more accurate and relevant to human beings, we should use them."

What is a "Model" in Science?

Scientists use models because they cannot begin every experiment on a human patient. Click through everyday examples below to see how models work—and where they have limits:

Paper Map vs. Real Road

A map represents a physical place. However, a paper map cannot show you that a road was closed 5 minutes ago due to an accident. It is a helpful tool, but it has limits.

Crash Test Dummy vs. Human Driver

Dummies show impact severity in a crash. But a dummy cannot tell an emergency room doctor if it feels dizzy, nauseous, or anxious after the crash occurred.

Mouse Model vs. Human Patient

A mouse has organs and blood like we do, but a mouse is not a small human. Its genes, immune system, metabolism, and lifespan are vastly different from ours.

>90%

The Translation Gap: Over 90% of drugs that pass animal studies fail in human clinical trials, often due to unexpected toxicity or lack of effectiveness.

87%

Precision of Organ-Chips: In a landmark study, human Liver-Chips correctly identified 87% of liver-toxic drugs that had passed previous safety checks.

What are NAMs? (New Approach Methodologies)

NAMs are not a single replacement machine—they are a modern, high-tech toolkit built around actual human biology. Click each method to see how it works:

Instead of growing cells in flat dishes, scientists can grow 3D clusters of human cells called organoids that mimic the structural behavior of human organs.

Small, transparent devices (often the size of a key) containing living human cells. Fluids flow through micro-channels to mimic blood flow, breathing, or muscle contractions in living human organs.

Advanced algorithms and AI analyze millions of real-world patient records, genetic data, and chemical structures to predict safely how a human body will react to a drug.

Questions Every Critical Thinker Should Ask 💡

When you hear that something has been "scientifically tested," don't stop being curious. Ask:

  • What was tested?
  • What model was used?
  • How well does that model represent a real human being?
  • Was the method verified against actual human health outcomes?

These aren't anti-science questions, these are scientific questions!
