Shima

Shima’s Story

Shima (like Stormy) was confined in a tiny stall for months on end while her urine was collected to produce Premarin, a hormone replacement drug for women. For years, she was impregnated, confined, and her foals were taken. When she arrived at the sanctuary in February of 2007 with Stormy, she was overweight, pregnant, unhealthy and afraid of humans. But, as if in response to her new lives of freedom and affection, she gave birth to a healthy colt, Milagro (Miracle) and – for the first time in her life – her baby wasn’t taken away. She enjoys a tight and affectionate bond with Second Chance. She is the leader of the horses.
