Twenty former research horses are in immediate need of placement. Scarlet is just 10 years old with much of her life yet to live and enjoy. Trudy is missing her right eye, but is one of the sweetest horses you could ever hope to meet. Bailey was a champion jumper before being donated into research. These are just a few of the beautiful Thoroughbreds whose time in research has come to an end. They are in urgent need of new homes or sanctuary. As Kindness Ranch cannot currently accept additional horses, we are actively working with this institution to find these horses new homes or sanctuaries. Please help us find these horses new homes.

The vast majority of animals in research are euthanized. This research institution has turned to us in trust to find homes for these horses. We hope additional institutions will also consider adoption programs for their research animals.

The horses are between the ages of 10 and 19. Many were in the racing industry prior to being donated into research. They have participated in many nutrition and physiology studies, but they are healthy. None have been ridden during their time in research so only advanced riders should consider testing their riding abilities.

If you are interested in adoption or you have a place at your sanctuary, please contact Karen@Kindnessranch.org immediately. We will send you an application. Efforts are being made to raise funds for transport. Please apply regardless of your ability to pay for transport. There is a high probability that we will have a number of horses brought to Wyoming from the East coast, and we will transport the horses to sanctuaries from here.

Daisy and Donald, two beagle basset mixes, are the newest Kindness Ranch residents. They arrived a few days ago from Michigan. Just two years old, Daisy and Donald were owner surrendered to an animal shelter in Michigan that releases to a notorious Class B dealer. The Class B dealer sells dogs and cats to research facilities. Their time was nearly up when we asked local wonderful rescue workers to pull them from the shelter.

It is often the case that bringing animals to a new life involves many caring people. This is especially true in the story of Donald and Daisy. A shelter employee and a network of volunteers associated with a local rescue group all helped to bring the dogs to Kindness Ranch.

While Daisy and Donald have been here only a short time, they have charmed visitors and employees alike. They are very affectionate, playful, and gentle. They love to play tug-of-war with handmade ropes given to us by Marguerite Jandreau, a lovely volunteer from Maine. Ball is also another favorite activity. Cuddles are always appreciated and sought after.

The dogs appear to be housebroken and they are very gentle. They would be good with children over the age of 6. Do you have room in your heart and home for a precious new family member? If so, give us a call!

Sanctuary resident Angel, a whippet mix, met her special person today. Birgit Fowler Burke of Laramie, Wyoming saw Angel’s picture online and fell in love. From this day forward, Birgit says, Angel’s life is going to be filled with cuddles, couch time, and music. After six years in teaching and research, Angel is starting a whole new life with a very special person.

As Birgit is a musician and university library employee, Angel will now enjoy a comfy couch while listening to Birgit play the mandolin, guitar, and mountain dulcimer. Her new friends will be two cats, some birds, and the dogs of Birgit’s musician friends. She has a fenced yard to enjoy at her leisure.

The match appears to Birgit to be a perfect one. From the way Angel relaxed on the couch next to her, it seems she would agree. Birgit is a devoted animal lover who has helped out many animals in the past. She is looking forward to introducing Angel to new activities and giving her lots of love.

In the last few weeks, we have been so touched to receive boxes filled with thoughtful toys for the cats, dogs, pigs, and horses. The animals have been overjoyed! As former research animals, toys and treats are often new. If you have never received a toy or a treat, it is all the more precious. Thanks to our generous supporters, everyone has enjoyed a special treat meant just for them!

Connie, a beagle, is one of Kindness Ranch’s founding animals and longest residents. Today, Connie is celebrating her formal adoption into her forever home in Boulder, Colorado. We couldn’t be happier for her! While her new life is filled with treats and love, it wasn’t always that way. Connie was rescued from a Missouri puppy mill that bred beagles for research. She came to the ranch when the puppy mill was shut down by the local sheriff due to its deplorable conditions.

Former employee, Jill Bielawski, began fostering Connie early this summer. Mornings filled with snuggles, camping trips, and constant company have proven impossible to give up. What started as a foster home has now become a life-long commitment.
When Connie first moved in with Jill, she was a bit shy. It didn’t take long, however, before she befriended the two resident bunnies. Connie is now nicknamed “Bunny” as she comes when the bunnies are called. Meadow the rabbit particularly loves being close to her and follows her around.

Prone to separation anxiety, Connie enjoys being by Jill’s side most of the time. Fortunately, Jill works from home. Connie has claimed a favorite blanket on the couch and enjoys comfortable naps.

At other times, Connie will venture out into Boulder with Jill. She walks well on a leash in town, is becoming accustomed to “city life” after the ranch, and even accompanies Jill into stores and dressing rooms. During the summer she camped out in a tent and went out for dinner and drinks at outdoor patios in Boulder.

When Jill and Connie return home after being out for a walk or errands, Bunny zooms to the door and jumps up and down, then leaps up on the couch. She also acts like a puppy after baths, which she accepts good-naturedly. She enjoys running through the snow and greeting the many other dogs who live in the neighborhood, including a young beagle down the hall. She is eager to please and always comes when called, unless she’s completely absorbed in a scent, of course.

Connie has discovered new tastes. She has become rather a connoisseur of vegetarian delights. In addition to her meals, Connie likes sweet potato treats, quinoa, vegetables, peanut butter and beans.

At night, she’s a great snuggler and is good at sleeping in, although she snores like someone much larger than her 23 lbs. In the morning, Jill and Connie have a ritual in which Connie rolls around on her back and gets a belly rub. Life is filled with love and creature comforts. Congratulations, Jill and Connie!

Thanks to a beautiful friendship and a shared love for animals, our former research horses are enjoying a new shelter. Janette Boehm of Missouri donated $5,000 to build the shelter and purchase hay in memory of her friend and animal rights activist, Norma McMillen. Before her death, Norma asked Janette to make a donation to Kindness Ranch. Yesterday, that wish was honored as we hung this beautiful sign designed by Janette on the front of Norma’s shelter. Honey checked out and approved the new digs immediately.

Norma McMillen died on October 4,2008. For the last 25 years of her life she cared for retired horses and cats and dogs rescued from puppy mills and auctions. She often worked with law enforcement officials to better help the animals. Her work on behalf of animals covered a variety of issues from cosmetic and medical testing to dog and cock fighting. Norma mobilized activists and entered schools to educate children.

In October, Janette contacted Karen, Co-Director, at Kindness Ranch to discuss how to best honor her dear friend. With winter fast approaching, they decided a shelter to protect horses would be very fitting. As a Vice President of an advertising firm, Janette has an artistic background. With the help of her art director, Janette designed this beautiful sign for the shelter. Now that the shelter has been built, the sign was hung. Norma’s love for animals will transcend her life as the building shelters horses in need for years to come.

Clyde and Cosmo, two five and a half month old foals, arrived at the ranch last night! Clyde and Cosmo were born mid-May of this year at a Premarin Ranch in Canada. They were at high risk of going to slaughter until our generous donors supported our efforts to take them out of harms way!
Premarin refers to pregnant mare urine. Many women in menopause take the drug, though there is now a synthetic version available. Mares at Premarin ranches are kept pregnant in stalls with a tube connected to collect their urine. The mares have a high rate of slaughter, but the foals are even at greater risk.

In this case, we were not allowed to take the mares, but we were able to obtain the foals.

Clyde and Cosmo arrived in relatively good shape. They loped around their paddock and quickly found their five foot round bowl of food. They ate the grass hay with enthusiasm. Their coats have the fuzzy texture of babies. Clyde has a gooey eye infection indicative of the stress of weaning and the long voyage. With appropriate veterinary care, he will be back on the road to good health in no time.

The foals do not want us to touch them yet, but they show signs of curiosity and friendliness. Over time, they will relax and learn to bond with humans. It is already apparent that Clyde and Cosmo became friends on their journey to the ranch.

Thank you for supporting these efforts. If you would like to support their care and the care of other horses at the ranch, we would greatly appreciate your donation.

A Halloween miracle occurred at Kindness Ranch last night. After six years in teaching and research, Angel, a 20 pound whippet mix, was boarded on two planes to make the long journey from the East coast to Kindness Ranch and a new life.

For the first six years of her life, Angel lived in a kennel environment with no exposure to family or home life. Angel was born in a large facility that breeds dogs for research. She was then sold to a major university on the East coast. She was first used for breeding and later in teaching and research.

Unlike many research facilities, this institution has an active adoption program. Four months ago, Angel was placed into a caring family home. Unfortunately, her timidity, fearful behavior, and housebreaking problems made the family soon feel they were in over their heads. A fearful dog with housebreaking problems has few chances for adoption. Worried, the family and head the adoption program at the university turned to Kindness Ranch.

Angel’s challenges are not uncommon for animals that have spent significant time in research. At Kindness Ranch, we work hard to help animals overcome fear and adjustment issues. After her long journey, we settled Angel into her new home. Angel immediately checked out her soft bed, treats, and the couch with its big pillows. She curled up next to Karen, Co-Director of the ranch, for cuddles. The next morning, she showed interest in her walk around the ranch grounds, sniffing all the way and pausing now and then for reassuring pats.

For Angel, these new smells and sights are just the beginning of her rehabilitation process. We are confident that Angel can learn to be housebroken, and then she will be a good candidate for a loving family. Until then, she will enjoy daily love, companionship, and adventures at Kindness Ranch.
