Companion Animal Caretaker

job collage Kindness Ranch is currently seeking a passionate, motivated, and qualified candidate to join our animal care team as a Companion Animal Caretaker.
The primary duties of this position are the direct care of all sanctuary dogs and cats, supervising volunteers and visitors, helping with cleaning and maintaining the guest cabins, and assisting with adoptions of the dogs and cats.
Companion Animal Caretaker essential duties include, but are not limited to:
• Ensuring that our dogs’ and cats’ daily needs are met with the highest possible standards for care. Includes preparing food and water, cleaning habitats, distributing medications, socialization, exercise, and daily monitoring for health and behavior concerns;
• Socializing and creating an engaging and stimulating environment for all of the dogs and cats;
• Assisting in the efforts of the rehab and training program by following our positive, reward-based training protocols;
• Assisting with adoptions of dogs and cats by engaging with visitors and potential adopters and assisting with phone calls, application processing, and paperwork as needed;
• Supervising volunteers and day visitors in daily ranch activities;
• Thorough cleaning of rental cabins after guests’ departure as defined in cleaning protocols;
• Transporting animals using company vehicles to and from vet appointments or for adoptions as needed;
• Occasional cleaning chores in the barn area and/or assisting with the care of the horses, pigs, sheep, and cows;
• Assisting in training new staff or volunteers as assigned;
• Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Completion of a high school diploma at a minimum;
• Prior professional canine and/or feline care experience at a shelter or sanctuary, day care or boarding facility, vet clinic, or other similar animal care organization or business;
• Basic computer and internet skills, including use of email and word processing and database software;
• Strong communication and customer service skills.
Basic Physical Requirements
• Ability to stand and/or walk for significant periods of time.
• Ability to work indoors, in small spaces, or outdoors, and in all weather conditions.
• Ability to walk unaided on unpaved, uneven, rugged, and sometimes muddy and slippery roads, trails, yards, pastures, and various types of flooring.
• Ability to work with and handle dogs and cats of various sizes and temperaments.
• Ability to bend and squat, and to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
• Ability to work energetically throughout the day with people and animals.
The Companion Animal Caretaker is also expected to have read and meet or exceed the standards set forth in the Essential Capabilities of Employees document.
The Companion Animal Caretaker should be a person who:
• Can engage in a positive manner with staff, volunteers, and guests to ensure an overall pleasant experience for all visitors;
• Likes working with people as much as they like working with animals;
• Is a reliable team player and can be flexible day-to-day regarding scheduling and duties assigned;
• Can work unsupervised when needed and stay on task;
• Has experience and/or the willingness to learn and apply positive animal training techniques;
• Is open to challenging and expanding their knowledge in the animal welfare field;
• Is positive, energetic, and motivated to help carry out Kindness Ranch’s mission.
Salary, Benefits, and Schedule
The Companion Animal Caretaker is a non-exempt hourly position with a beginning rate of at least $8.50/hour.
Benefits include two (2) weeks of paid time off per year (accumulated by the pay period). We are unable to offer company-sponsored insurance at this time, but it may be a possibility in the future.
All Animal Caretakers should expect a varied and flexible schedule to include days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Other Considerations
All employees at Kindness Ranch must be at least 18 years old.
The Companion Animal Caretaker is expected to have and maintain a valid driver’s license and clean driving record throughout employment. Occasional use of company vehicles may be required.
This position may require attendance to occasional off-site professional development or training programs.
